Myth or Fact? - INJURIES NEED REST Well, for the most part, this is a myth. Let us explain. Movement is key to speeding up the healing process. Movement is essential in promoting better blood flow. Why is blood flow important you ask? We need "something" in our bodies to carry out toxins and deliver the goods (the goods being oxygen and other nutrients). Blood is the "something" that does all of this! Moving an injured body part will also decrease the risk of your body developing unwanted scar tissue. Don't get us wrong, scar tissue is important in any healing process. However, unwanted scar tissue, or too much scar tissue can actually prevent a body part from gaining back functional range of motion. On the other end of they myth, you do need some rest. You're injured! You can't work/exercise/play sports as hard as you normally would. We call this relative rest (vs bed rest) Listen to your body, listen to your physiotherapist, and gradually work back up to what your normal is. Don't wait to see if your injury will heal on its own. One of the most common statements we hear from our clients is "it happened two years ago, I thought it would get better on its own!" 🤨 With the right education, the right exercises, and getting yourself booked in for treatment right away, you can decrease your healing time tremendously! (There's a reason clients with total knee/total hip replacements are in for physio the NEXT DAY) "Movement is medicine"- Adam Leca, PT
